Mr. Lawrence Hall Sr.

LAWRENCE HALL, SR., was born to the late John Henry and Ruth Mae Crier Hall on September 3, 1939, in Independence, LA. He received his education in St. Helena Parish. He graduated from High School in 1958 and briefly attended Southern University, majoring in Agricultural Science. Lawrence, Sr., moved to New Orleans, LA, in his early 20’s where he met and married Eva Mae Malancon. To this union, four children were born: Shelly Marie, Lawrence Jr., Eric John, and Casandra Ann. He was employed as Foreman while constructing the Hale Boggs Memorial Bridge, formally the Luling-Destrehan Bridge; Foreman during the addition to the N. O. International Airport Southwest Terminal; and a Longshoreman for 40 plus years at ILA 3000 on the river front in New Orleans, LA. He was elected as Constable for the 7th Justice Court, Parish of Jefferson in 2015, and was an active member of the Westbank Civic Association. Lawrence was very active in the Civil Rights Movement. He was honorably mentioned in the documentary book entitled “A Different Day: African American Struggles for Justice in Rural Louisiana,1900-1970, by Greta de Jong, which explores the history of racial inequality and the activism of black residents in rural areas. Lawrence and some of his siblings were a part of the initiation of the St. Helena’s school desegregation lawsuit in 1952. He was a man known for his strength, courage, and deep compassion for others. He believed in standing up for what was right and was especially known for advocating for those less fortunate. His life reflected one of love, resilience, and purpose. Lawrence was proceeded in death by his parents, John Henry and Ruth Mae Crier Hall; five brothers: Stanley, Eston Howard, Sterling Ray, Lorin Eugene, and Charles Albert; one sister: Irma Neat. Brothers/Sisters-in-Law: Lorenzo (Morris) Favorite, Joseph (Flavia) Malancon, Virginia (Alvin) Williams, Ferdinand (Mamie) Malancon, Henry Malancon, Emily (Fletcher) Weatherspoon, Alexandar (Martha) Malancon, Rita (Curtis) Carter, Willie (William) Hall, and Bernice (Adolph) Hall. On Monday, March 23rd, the Lord called Lawrence, Sr., home. He leaves a legacy of love and fond memories to his wife, Eva Mae; four children: Shelly Marie (George) Melancon, Harvey, LA; Lawrence,Jr., (Lisa), New Orleans, LA; Eric John (Felicia), Greensburg, LA; Casandra Ann (Lymell) Zenon, Vacherie, LA. Twelve grandchildren: LaShawn, Lawrence, III, Latrell, Erica, Zaakirah, Lymell, Jr., Aneesah, Lauren, Marquist, Markell, Felon, and Jeana. Eight brothers: William, Slaughter LA; Adolph, Newborn, GA; Eual Lee (Barbara), Zachary, LA; Clifton Wallace (Armelle), Amite, LA; Roland Hayes (Neon), Slaughter, LA; Emanuel, Kentwood, LA; Wennal Harold (Earnestine), Baton Rouge, LA; Cleo (Vicki) Greensburg, LA; Two sisters: Eunice (Rev. Celestin Jr.) Harris, Amite, LA; Junice Marie (Rev. Clyde, Jr.) Robertson, Hammond, LA; an adopted sister, Ronnie Hartman, Minneapolis, MN: Sister-in-law, Barbara Francis Hall.
